About Classes and Workshops

Frequently students have asked me to create workshops for a certain time or for a specific group or to emphasize a special topic, and I have been very pleased to design classes according to these requests.

So, if you have an idea, or a group, or a time slot, please call or email me and I will be happy to work with you to suit your needs . I also offer private, one - on - one teaching, as well as arrangements for small groups of 2 - 4 students .

Independent Study Workshops, 2017: West Hartford CT
Jan 14, Feb 25, Apr 8, May 20, Jul 8, Oct 7, Dec 2, 2017
Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The main goal of the Independent Study Workshops Series is to support each artist's quest to give priority to their art making and to encourage steady and regular time in their own studios throughout the year. These workshops also offer feedback on their art that cannot be gotten elsewhere - honest, skilled, helpful, and encouraging. There is no hands-on work time. About three quarters of the day is devoted to instructor-guided group critique, broken up by 15 minute breaks and a half hour lunch break. Attending artists are all working on their own individual projects on their own time, and bring in works in progress or finished works to be critiqued. From one to two hours at the end of the workshop are devoted to either an art-related discussion or a demonstration/activity. Many participants commit to attending all or almost all sessions throughout the year, but others are welcome to attend on an occasional basis. Try one workshop and see how it fits your needs. Tuition: $120 per each one-day workshop, paid directly to Debi Pendell

The workshop morning is devoted to a group critique, guided by the instructor. Participants bring in completed works and/or works in progress for feedback. After a lunch break, the afternoon is a hands-on work time of about 3 hours, with each person working on their own self-directed projects. The instructor is available at this time for advice and assistance, and impromptu lessons are often triggered and can include the whole group (or whoever is interested). This is also a time when participants learn from each other. The last half hour of the day, we do a quick look around to see what everyone has accomplished during work time. Many participants commit to attending all or almost all sessions throughout the year, but others are welcome to attend on an occasional basis. If you are interested but unsure, come to just one workshop and try it out.

MASSMoCA Residency Workshop: Visual Artist Independent Study & Critique Intensive
October 27 - Nov 2, 2017, check-in at 4 p.m. on Oct. 27; check-out by 10 a.m. on Nov. 2
Prior to arriving for this 5-day workshop, each artist will design their own project, and will email these project plans to the instructor for approval. Throughout the week the instructor will lead critique sessions during which the entire group will move from studio to studio. A unique critique method will be taught which employs the objective principles of art while also engaging subjective responses - emphasis is placed on the development of a vocabulary that expands everyone's ability to verbally express visual experience. The core idea is to give feedback that makes each artist excited and encouraged to get back to work. Searching, experimenting, and artistic growth are emphasized, rather than the finished product. Inspiration and ideas are shared among the 8 artists as they view and discuss each other's work-in-progress.

Included with the workshop:
  • 6 nights lodging (each person gets their own bedroom with Queen bed, linens/towels included)
  • Full kitchen (kitchenware included)
  • 4 people/bedrooms per apartment, 1 shared bath per apartment, washer/dryer in each apartment
  • 24 hour access to the individual studios and to MASS MoCA's galleries from 4:00 on Oct. 27 until 4:00 on Nov. 2
  • Group dinner on Friday, Oct. 27
  • A total of 5 lunches (Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday). Participants can arrange their own lunch on Tuesday, when MASS MoCA's cafe is closed
